Costs and Fees

The Nutmeg Soaring Association Inc. is a private non-profit club organized in 1956 to provide equipment and instruction to members at low cost and to encourage the sport of soaring.  The club is a volunteer organization and in no way resembles a commercial operation. There is no paid staff. Flight instructors and tow pilots volunteer their services and members run the ground operation. Flight times cannot be reserved. The club is looking for members who wish not only to take up the sport of soaring, but will contribute their time and skills to run a successful and safe operation.

Annual Assessments cover aircraft / facilities usage and instruction.  Tow fees are charged in addition to the assessment as used (see below).

New members are considered provisional the first year. Acceptance of provisional members into Full membership is dependent on the recommendation of the Operations Committee and a majority vote of members of the Board of Directors.

In order to fly, Members must have annual assessments fully paid. Members may add a family membership for instruction of family members by paying a second annual assessment. Family members may not vote or hold office. Members may take guests for fun flights or give guests their place on the sign-up list for flights with qualified members, but not for instruction.

Associate members participate in club activities on a limited basis. They pay the reduced annual assessment and fly only when no regular or family members are signed up to fly. This usually means late in the day. Associates may not fly solo in club equipment or in any other glider. All members are required to join the Soaring Society of America. Annual dues include a subscription to Soaring Magazine. The Nutmeg Newsletter keeps members informed of meetings, operations, safety bulletins, and monthly Schedules of flight instructors, tow pilots, and duty pilots.

Introductory Memberships for 30 or 90 days are a great way to learn about glider flying and Nutmeg Soaring.

Owing to the nature of the activity, all persons under 18 years of age who wish to join the club must provide a written and signed permission slip from a parent or legal guardian. Official membership is contingent on approval by the Operations Committee and the Board of Directors.

Please call if you would like more information about membership in Nutmeg Soaring Association.
